Exploration of Devils’ Caves is a presentation and Q&A led by Julia Aoki & Ayaka Yoshimizu. Yoshimizu and Aoki will present their research on a 103-installment news series published from 1908-1912 by the Japanese Canadian newspaper, Tairiku-Nippo. This series, “Exploration of Devils’ Caves,” details the movements/migrations of sexworkers from Japan to Vancouver, into the interior, as well as the logistics of running brothels, such as sexworkers' relationship to police, to other racialized groups and to European-settler communities. Aoki and Yoshimizu are currently both PhD candidates in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. Please note this presentation will involve reference to sex work, instances of violence against women and graphic language. More info ›
